Patroclus Update Map


On 2023 Sep 22 UT, the 131 km diameter asteroid (617) Patroclus will occult a 11.7 mag star in the constellation Grus for observers along a broad path of significant uncertainty across Australia, from Hervey Bay across Queensland and The Northern Territory to Timber Creek. Tke one sigma limit incldues costal Queensland from Brisbane to Mackay, and Wyndham and Kununuarra in Western Australia.

In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 3.47 mag to 15.10 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 12.090 seconds.

This update is based on, astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by the IAU Minor Planet Center.
