ESSENTIAL READING before installing WIN-OCCULT!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Windows version of OCCULT is based on the DOS version of OCCULT. However the larger portion of the code has been written afresh. The Windows programming environment has many significant advantages over the DOS environment - both in writing the code, and the user interface. The main disadvantage is that the .EXE files are much larger, and there are a number of large support files that are required. The starting point for this version was to replicate the functionality of the DOS version - which has been achieved (with one minor exception). In the process there were many opportunities to enhance the functionality which were implemented wherever possible. The install files for this initial version of win-OCCULT have been created on the assumption that the user already has a running version of DOS OCCULT. In creating the Win version, I have (wherever possible) used the same data files as in the DOS version, and the install files do not include copies of files present in the DOS version such as (for example) the star catalogue files. [Amongst other things, this has also imposed restrictions on where the program can be installed.] To successfully install WIN-OCCULT, you MUST MUST MUST!!!! 1. Already have the DOS version of OCCULT installed. It will be located in a root directory called \OCCULT. 2. To install the win version, run SETUP.exe. [Note: you may be asked to re- boot. If SETUP doesn't execute again automatically after the reboot, run it again] 3. SETUP will ask you to specify the directory to install. It should suggest the OCCULT directory. If you install in a directory other than \OCCULT, it will not work properly. The install process will place a number of .EXE files (as well as 4 .DLL files, and a .INI file) in the OCCULT directory, and two data files in the OCCULT\MOONdirectory. Additionally a number of 'system' type files that are essential to VisualBasic will be located in the \OCCULT directory, and the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory After installation, the programs should be fully functional - with one exception. The DOS version of OCCULT stored some 'default' data in a file called \occult\defaults.dat. That file is not used by win-OCCULT. Rather the default data are stored in the file called \occult\occult.INI. You will need to enter the data relevant to you, from an 'options' menu in any of the OCCULT modules. I have released this version without a fully-developed Help-file system (there is a fair bit of work to do that). But hopefully, the software will be self-explanaotory - especially for those who area familiar with the DOS version. In any event, I am sure that there are a some bugs to be found (hopefully not many!), as well as opportunities for useful enhancement. I would welcome advice of any bugs /suggestion for improvements, by emailing me at: Heraldd@Canberra.Dialix.com.au Dave Herald
