Tauntonia Update Map


On 2007 May 12 UT, the 64 km diameter asteroid (581) Tauntonia will occult a 3.9 mag star in the constellation Capricornus for observers along a path across Australia beginning in Western Australia passing over Carnarvon and then Meekatharra just before sunrise. Then path then moves across central and eastern parts of Australia just after sunrise, becoming a daytime event as it passes near Broken Hill, Orange, Gosford and Newcastle in New South Wales.

In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 11.5 mag to 15.4 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 4.2 seconds.

This update is based on UNSO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Alice Monet, historical astrometry from the MPC files (via AstDys), and the following catalogs for the star position: .
