On the evening of 2003 Feb 05 UT, the 50 km diameter asteroid (270) Anahita will occult a 9.4 mag star in the constellation Leo for observers along a path across Australia, E Africa.

The target star is component 'C' of a triple star system (Struve 1426). It is the faintest and northern most component - magnitude = 9.4 at a seperation of 7.6" at a PA of 8 degrees from the close AB pair. The southern half is a close (0.8") pair with a combined magnitude of around 8. Observers will need to be able to resolve the C component individually in order to observe the occultation. In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 2.8 mag to 12.1 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 4.3 seconds.

This update is based on UNSO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Ron Stone, TMO astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Bill Owen, historical astrometry from AstDys, and the following catalogs for the star position: Hipparcos , Tycho-2.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Astrometric updates such as these should not be taken as definitive, but rather only as an indication of where the true track may lie relative to the original predicted track. Observers must bear in mind that later astrometry, in which the target star is measured in the same field as the asteroid, may still reveal substantial changes to the predicted track and time of the event. For this reason it is most important that observers far from the predicted track still monitor the event.
