ASTROMETRIC UPDATE:
OCCULTATION BY (1042) AMAZONE - 2001 OCTOBER 17

[Prediction by Edwin Goffin]

[Prediction using OCCULT software]

The prediction given by Goffin runs from around Mount Gambier at local sunset to the north coast of New South Wales. OCCULT's path runs from central South Australia across Queensland to the coast just north of Rockhampton.

UPDATE: 14 October 2001

THE UPDATED PATH

Amazone Update

This updated path lies around 0.3" to the north of that given by Goffin and around 30 seconds earlier. The new path runs from the far south west of Queensland past Charleville to the coast between Rockhampton and Gladstone (9:02:15 UT).

The uncertainties of this new path are unusually large as the astrometry is poorer than typically received. This is due to the far southern declination of (1042) Amazone in recent months such that observations from Flagstaff, Arizona have been made at low altitude. Brisbane certainly lies well within the error margin at 9:02 UT.

Calculation Source

This prediction update has been computed by Steve Kerr of Rockhampton, Queensland Australia based on astrometry from Ron Stone of the US Naval Observatory - Flagstaff Station. The UCAC position of the target star has been used.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Astrometric updates such as these should not be taken as definitive, but rather only as an indication of where the true track may lie relative to the original predicted track. Observers must bear in mind that later astrometry, in which the target star is measured in the same field as the asteroid, may still reveal substantial changes to the predicted track and time of the event. For this reason it is most important that observers far from the predicted track still monitor the event.
