Goffin's path crosses central and southern Argentina and Chile before crossing the southern Pacific Ocean. The path then crosses the South Island of New Zealand around Dunedin passing across the Tasman Sea to cross the southern New South Walse coast at very low altitude and just on local sunset. No occultation is predicted by OCCULT !!!

UPDATE: 16 June 2000

Jan Manek of the Stefanik Observatory has attempted to compute an update for this event. The results of these calculations show that the asteroid will pass as far as 48" north (from geocentric view) of the target star around 00:47 UT which is 6.5 hours earlier than predicted. As a result, no occultation will be visible from any point on Earth.

This calculation is consistant with the views expressed elsewhere on these webpages (click here for reference) and also with calculations performed in OCCULT and Guide 7. As a general visualisation of the situation, attached below is a star chart generated in Guide 7 showing the path of the asteroid relative to the target star. This chart covers around 40' by 30' with a magnitude limit around 13.5.
