[Prediction by Edwin Goffin]

[Prediction using OCCULT software]

Goffin's prediction crosses the very northern tip of the North Island of New Zealand, crosses the Australian east coast in the vicinity of Coff's Harbour, NSW to the Western Australian coast near Geraldton. The OCCULT generated path lies around 0.2" to the north with virtually no difference in time.

UPDATE: 3 February 2000

This prediction update is supplied by Jan Manek of the Stefanik Observatory, Prague, and is based on USNO/Flagstaff astrometry for the minor planet and the ACT star position.

Summary:

This calculation gives a small 0.5 of a path width shift to the south and 0.3 minute later than the predictions prepared by Edwin Goffin. The path covers the northern tip of the North Island north of Whangarei at 13:43 UT, crosses the New South Wales coast between Coff's Harbour and Port Macquarie at 13:46.3 UT and the Western Australian coast on the northern outskirts of Perth at 13:51 UT (at low altitude - 18 degrees).

There is some confusion over the size of the asteroid. IRAS indicate a size of 108 km whereas another unidentified source quotes 66 km. This smaller size is used in the uncertainties quoted here so the above path limits may be conservative and include most of Perth with an occultation maximum duration as long as 10.6 seconds.

Set out below is a more detailed finder chart for the target star. The occulted star is in the centre marked with a cross. The field size is 2.0 X 2.0 degrees and has a limiting magnitude of 12.5. Labelled stars have SAO identifiers marked. Chart prepared by Jan Manek.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Astrometric updates such as these should not be taken as definitive, but rather only as an indication of where the true track may lie relative to the original predicted track. Observers must bear in mind that later astrometry, in which the target star is measured in the same field as the asteroid, may still reveal substantial changes to the predicted track and time of the event. For this reason it is most important that observers far from the predicted track still monitor the event.
